Getting crazy excited to go home and see kids and family! We are out for about a month and half, our first holiday. I have had a christmas tree up for awhile and listening to christmas music. I love Christmas...

Wish everyone a warm Christmas with lots of family and love. All the best for the New Year!!!

Goodbye Sun!

Well we are quickly losing our sun. It comes over the horizon around 10 ish and sinks 3 ish. Soon it will be gone completly. On one side is the sun and the other is the moon. Thay chase each other around the sky. They seem so huge here and we feel so much closer. The sky just facinates me here, it really is different than any other place I have been in the world.

Snow Blizzards

The last few days have been snow with high winds. The tempture is hovering around -10, but with the wind chill factor it is about -27. Halloween night was incredible, we had about 150 kids, and ran out of candy, chips. People were coming on snow mobiles, but there was not enough snow. This year is very mild and not as much snow as any other year they have said. It is usually completly white by this time of year, and much colder. I wonder what global warming is really doing? Lookig forward to Holidays and seeing my family, we miss them so much. Soon I will put up some more pictures. take care!

Snow in Kugaaruk

Hmm hmm Santa Claus is coming to errrch. It's September and it snowed. This is going to mess majorly with my internal seasonal clock. All my life snow = christmas. Well here it means fall, the kids have been back in school for a month already. I have been too busy to go to the ocean to see if I can see any whales. But I sneak peaks often. It really feels more comfortable when I come back into town and everyone remembers me. This is the place where they say they are stingy for me, sure makes me feel wanted. Miss everyone, write mee

Today I bought a Pepsi

I have had one pepsi since I have been in the Arctic, good thing I am not a pop drinker. Anyways I was at the northern and they had a sale on a case of Pepsi $ 19.98. For some reason I wanted a pepsi so I bought one and paid $2 a can. I realised when I bought my few grocery I was not looking at the price but the due date. Things here never get taken off the shelf. I think they just dry up and fall into the cracks. Someone told me they saw a can of meat on the shelf and it was 15 years old. They bought it for a keepsake.
The weather is getting colder, the wind is very cold. I guess the snow is coming..

Holy Smoke

I smell smoke this morning,  We are way above the tree line, but I sure smell smoke from forest fires. It is thick smoke in the air. Yesterday we had a southerly wind and it was crazy hot all night, It has carried smoke from the fires in NWT.

Anyways it is looking to be a hot day again, kinda looks like a fishing day..

Happy adventures

Whale

Coffee break and for snack is whale blubber...

They have caught some whale and eveyone in town was getting pieces of it. It is very popular, eaten raw..The weather here today was hot hot..On my temp outside my window it said 30' c mind you that is against the house facing the south. It really should be out of the direct sun, but I wanted to read it in the winter without going outside. I walked home after work with a shoulder of Caribou and a fish, I was sweating so much much by the time I got home..

I maybe heading back to Kugaaruk in a week or so.. It is the home of the Nar Whale, so maybe I will get to see one..

It is light out 24 hours, so kids come out to play around midnight and they play out all night, and sleep all day. They keep playing under our house first on the ice then in the water. It was very noisy and we were having problems sleeping. They would yell and scream and cry.. Sometimes at 2 am I would go out and tell them not to play there cause of the wires it was unsafe. They really did care and would still play. So one night i went out and showed them the septic and said there is poo poo under there, well they could not get out fast enough... The next night there were different kids playing so Reza went out and was saying poo poo, I could hear the kids saying what, he would repeat poo poo...I'm sure all the neighbours heard him saying we have poo poo, so we have not had a kid near our place in a few weeks... blessed sleep..

Have a great weekend All!

Fishing and I got one!!

First I caught this

Then Iranimo caught this

Then he caught one

Then I caught this

He is just posing with MINE! hee hee

What a fun day, we were both new fishing people. He is a little wet from one of his marvelous casts...hee hee.

I had myself a big knot I was undoing while I look over to watch him do a big cast, he forgot to flip that thing over and cast himself right into the Arctic Ocean. He looks over right away to see if the new guy was watching he was not but I sure was. I was laying on the ground laughing..
When I got my big one on the line he was running up and down yelling pull it in.. I said I was trying but it was pulling me everywhere. So he grabs the line and trys to pull it, he says whoa and starts yelling again pull it in, why you playing with it... Finally I got it to the shore and just as it lands on the sand and tide the hook cames out. I yelled grab it, he does. So I will have to share the glory with him. Now he is hooked, wants to fish all the time. He was gaurding the last two nights has a little sleep then gets up and says lets go fishing...

Beautiful Kugaaruk

One morning this just apeared out of nowhere.. looked like a part of the clouds.

Yesterday they were putting there boats in and today they have a few ice blocks to get around
Stone church built in the 1940's how they got cement up here they who knows??

Gorgeous smelly flowers

Inukshuk watching over the graves.

Here  a few more days then head home to Kugluktuk. It has been a long two weeks away from Hubby. But I have been busy year end always busy. This is also where they hunt the Nar Whales, the ones with the long tusks. The hunt starts in August, wish I could see them swimming. Still light all night, and the kids play outside all night. Different life up here, but I still smile everytime I htink I am on top of the world, what an experience... You gotta do it!

Ice River and a Wedding

The river broke yesterday. All the ice that was piling up broke out to the ocean. There was also a wedding two little flower girls in traditional clothes, they were very cute. Others are from the church, gorgeous artwork on the walls and the antler candle holders I loved.

Home

Well I am home again, most of the snow is gone. Soon the river will be broken up and the water will push the ice. They have said when the ice is being pushed down it makes loud noises, they say the river sings, I can't wait. This weekend we will walk over to see the river and take pictures. When I flew over from Yellowknife the sights out the window were breath taking. We followed the coppermine river all the way to Kugluktuk. I could see the brown muddy water flowing south, till it was stuck behind the froozen river. I could see the blue froozen water of the ocean. the water comes ontop of the ice and it changes color. I will be flying over to Cabridge Bay in a few weeks and I can't wait to see Victoria Island. From there I will be going to Kugaaruk and it is suppose to be very beautiful when all the snow melts. It is colder over there so in a few weeks it should warm up. Well I hope to post some pictures after the weekend.

Handfull of gold....

Look what I found on our hike today...Gold...aka bunny poop
My garden is going to have a treat.

My pocket was full of these poops.
My beans with the bunny golden nugets. Look how big they are... Those bunnys must be huge, and I really have no desire to met one.
This is the Coppermine river starting to melt. First the snow melts on top and then the ice under. I can't wait to see it starting to move-flow again.
One of my work mates going out camping.
My house is in the last group of tall houses.
When we were walking a lady from work had got a Caribou, dinner last night.
Traditional fur clothing, that is survival here, you must wear fur, even today to go out in the winter.
This is an older map of the town. right beside the p in map is were I live. There is now another street behind us. I live on Hilltop.
Midnight sunset. That was a few weeks ago and now the sun is up all night.
Campers traveling on the frozen Artic Ocean. The Frozen waterways are the northern Highways. When they melt you can't go anywhere unless you have a boat.
Another pic of the kitchen, I do like my place..

Kids

We have been watching these little kids slidding down the snow in our back yard. They are very cute, one is about 4, her parka is bigger than she is.
Well yesterday there was one howling so Reza went out and asked if she was ok. She said she lost one of her boots. She was walking through snow and icy water. I jumped i my boots and went to save her. I said to her to jump on my back, but she was so heavy I couldn't get off the ground. Good lord she weighed a ton. so I picked her up and carried her to a dry spot while she told me where her boot was last seen. I found it in two feet of snow. I slipped it on her foot, she jump down and took off. oh I  thought ohhh your welcome!!

The weather is getting warm, as long as the sun shines. It is about -2 or +2. I have been taking my lettuce outside during the day. It has been very humid and soil is too wet. I have not watered for a week, so I hope they don't rot.

People are heading camping on the weekend, the geese have arrived and they are hunting them. They will also collect there eggs soon. This weekend I think we re the only ones left in town. This is the last long weekend before the ice starts to break up for the campers to go out to there cabins. They also ice fish, caribou hunt and hunt geese.

School is almost finished, they finish here end of May and start back end of August. That way families can go out on the land and hunt for food for the year.

What time is it??

Yesterday was gorgeous, Sun like I have never seen. It was so warm we were out in our t-shirts.

We decided to showel the snow off our deck last night. We got the door cleared so we could open it and get into our storage shed. We opened it to find stuff from the last tenant still in it. Mostly packaging garbage. But a christmas tree and a tent, now we can go camping...NOT. Sweating and hard work felt good in the sun. When we came back in we plunked on the couch and looked at the time, it was 11:30. We started to laugh there is no way we knew it was that late. Sorry neighbours for the late night noise.
We have our place looking really nice and it feels like home. Reza is very happy and says everyday thanks for bringing me here. He was pretty nervous for this kind of change. Today the sun is shinning beautiful again, so it is out on the deck again to start my little green house. We have showeled all the snow into our moving bins for outside water and it also keeps the greenhouse warmer. I have heard that in a few weeks when the river starts to break up the water can get salty, that is not good for plants.
My lettuce is an inch high, I have sprouted green and red pee/ppers, beans, tomatos, and herbs. They are very happy with this 24hour light. I need to get a tempiture gage for my green house, I need advice from Kerrie (Weather specialist).

Grow op planted

I have planted tomato's, lettuce, peppers, herbs, and a oriental lily. That was my Mother's Day present to myself. I was suppose to go to Cambridge Bay today but my flight was cancelled, we had a bit of snow storm. The evening was gorgeous sun. It is 10:30 and the sun is still out. It is so dry I will have to really watch my seeds and see how many times I need to water them.
My Iranimo is very happy here, especially because it has been very warm. About -5 for the past few days. We had huge Icicles hanging in front of the window I was afraid they might break the window when they come down.

Happy Mother's Day

To my mom

When I think of my mom I think of how lucky I was to have such a beautiful mom. They say that you pick your mom before you were born, then I sure got lucky to have choosen you! I remember when I was a teen and wanted to go to a party and you said ok but I will pick you up, and you did. I always felt safe cause I know if I was not there you would come looking for me. All those clothes you made by hand with love, I was unique with those fibres. You stayed home with us to raise us and I know I kept you busy, but I feel that if you didn't do that we wouldn't have turned out the way we did.

Thanks mom I love you

Snow Blizzard

Today the wind is blowing up a blizzard. The snow on the ground is so dry it blows around creating huge snow piles. Sometimes the road is blocked by these piles, they can also block your door. It is warming up just in time for DH. I am in a quick hurry in between trips to put my clothes in the good dreser before DH gets here or I will end up with the smaller one. Mr clean will have everything in ship shape, just have to mark my spots first. I have touched the channel changer without its cover....hee hee.
I fly out on Sunday again, this time for the south. Looking forward to have a quick visit with family. We will return on Friday and then I fly out on Sunday again to return to Cam Bay. Then I should be home for a few weeks before I head back to Kugaaruk.
They got the grizly bear that was around two weeks ago. They said he was very hungry, thanks goodness he didn't find me.
I hope to put up some more pics soon...

Cam Bay Today

I'm off to Cam Bay today. It is colder there so I am bringing all the long johns. Cam Bay is on Victoria Island.

Yesterday was warm and all day dripping off the roof. It is melting... I can't wait to see the breakup. The river breaks up first.

Frolics

Frolics has been a week of celebrating spring coming. There has been races on foot and machine. Dancing- drum and square. They had a huge Bingo for $10,000. on  Friday night. I went with a girl from work. She gave me a lift home on her machine. When I got on I said I was nervous riding on those things, So she said I'll show you a 360 and donuts (not the food kind). Well lest to say she spun me around as I screamed  head off.  I think I will do better if I drive it myself, not a good passenger.
I head out to Cam Bay next week, looking forward to seeing Victoria Island. It is supposed to be much colder there, so I  will bring the long johns.

May I go to Vancouver, very excited about that. Hope to see my mom! Then I get to bring DH up here.

My stuff has arrived some of it didn't make the trip. So I have been busy unpacking and finding room for all the stuff.
Always Busy here!

Yellowknife and Walmart

I am stuck in Yellowknife due to weather in Cam Bay.I will be returning with diapers and formula for co-workers baby. They get excited to be shopping at Walmart or anyone going near it. I will be heading to home tomorrow (Kugluktuk) tomorrow and cancelling the trip to Cam Bay for this tour. I will be back on the road next week. I love the beds in this hotel. Beds in the north consist of sigle small butt beds. Sometimes 3 in a room and you pay per bed not per room as that can be shared. Thanks I didn't have to experience that! I have heard that some people wake up in the morning and there are people sleeping in the beds that were not there the night before. Well I am going to sprawl myself on the bed and enjoy it...

Rode a machine yesterday

Well it was a blizzard here in Kugaaruk yesterday so my flight was cancelled. So I worked the whole day. The girl I worked with gave me a  ride back to my hotel on her machine. I couldn't help but have some little screams every time we went over a bump or around the corners. We arrived without it dumping us which I thought was pretty good. (We were going very very slow, I'm sure I could have walked faster) I got off and went to say thanks for the ride and she nearly fell off from laughing. I said you heard me screaming she said "yup". I bet her dinner table was having a laugh.

Well today the weather is nice and I will work a bit and then fly out to Gjoa Haven.

Nice weather= walk thanks

Grizzly in town

I was told there has been a grizzly close to town, as I am walking to work. I said to the guy as long as I can run faster than you I'm ok. I know what he was thinking, he was ok... I said hey you would be surprised how fast I could run if I saw a grizzly. I have to change my yak tracs to my runners, boots are too heavy. NoWAY I am going to be bear bate, so long fella.

I moved to a very nice place, I have a gorgeous view of the Artic Ocean out my livingroom window. It has vaulted ceilings, and a newer building so the kitchen is modern. I love the pantry and storage areas (hiding places). I have received 8 peices of my 104 pieces. So I got my bed and my couches (without the cushions)  but they ripped my couch in a few places. I have had a issue with the moving co. they said they would reassemble everything they took apart. Now I'm here and they said nope we just dump it in the front door. Nic so some things I will not be able to get back together, like the lazy boys they removed the backs, which took three of them to remove. GRRR I told them if that is the case send them back. Battle on!

I leave tomorrow for the Kitikmeot region tour. I am sooo excited.

DS (dear sister-Cor) can you mail up some of those water wings size XXXXL

Also note to people like me that didn't know---milk freezes just fine

Messy just moving in
Cream on the counter for coffee=$8.50

Cracks

Cor-- Cracks I told you it had cracks
See how far I walked on the Ice road, even with cracks.
I liked this picture of the Hamlet.
This is the Golf Course, It's on a sand bar. Can't wait to see what is under all this snow...

Ice road

This is about a quarter of the town, It is way bigger than I thought. In this shot you can see the ice road, the police station, and the Coppermine hotel. I crawled up this hill in front of my house to see the view.

DH is coming May 5---WOOHOOO

Everyone gone camping

Well I can't believe that they go camping with all this snow on the ground. But spring is in the air around here, everyone is buzzing around, the snow mobiles are constantly going by.

People are off to their cabins that they have all along the shore and along Victoria Island. Not sure how they declare there spot to put a cabin, but when they have the cabin it's theirs and nobody else uses it. They said that town will be dead this weekend as everyone is out on the land. They are spending time with family hunting, fishing and playing outside.

They have said my personal effects will be here on Monday. I will believe it when I see it.

I just went for a walk to what I thought was the ocean shore but It is the mouth of the river I have found out. I walked out a bit, but too strange for me to walk on water. It would be too cold if I fell in. I know they drive cars on it but what if I stepped on a crack or something. Maybe the truck made a crack and then well you know I have a bit of an issue about walking on water.

Still feels strange when I walk on the snow, like where is the bottom? How deep is this stuff? what if I sink? hmmm. They other day I kinda fell and it was very soft and was more like a roll. ( have at er Cor...lol) It looked real good to I'm sure. Still feels like I'm walking on the moon, with the sound of the snow  kinda cracking sounds under, the sound of my breathing and all the clothes. even the hills are flat on top like craters. But then the snow looks totally like icing sugar. It moves like it as well.

Another week is gone, that makes three!

Country food

On Friday after work it was nonstop snow mobiles going by. They were excited to get out on the land and go hunting. As I sit here Sunday I am hearing them all coming home. I did see one set of hoves so one family will be happy. All the foos they catch here is called country food.
Yesterday I walked down to the beach and saw the ice road. It is even plowed so trucks can drive on it. Most of the hunters are heading to Victoria Island that is where the Caribou are. It can take 8 hours of riding to get there. They sleep in tents in Caribou pelts. A little cold for meee.

Update Busy Busy

I arrived during a blizzard and it was the coldest day they had all year. I jumped off the plane with my coat open and my gloves in my pocket. I had taken a few steps in the -54 weather and it became painfully cold quickly. I fumbled for my gloves and at the same time tried to keep my coat closed to the frozen blowing wind. I arrived inside the much warmer inside on the airport. The plane had been delayed for 6 hours so there was a quite a few people waiting to leave and people being picked up. I looked around and waited for about 20 mins then two people came in the door and walked right up to me and said you must be Shannon and were here to pick you up. One was my new boss and the other another co-worker in the office. Both were very nice and great humour. I felt very comfortable right away. We loaded my 8 crazy heavy totes and off we went. Dealing with the 8 totes in Edmonton back to the hotel and back to the airport was a nightmare I wish to never repeat.

I get to my new home, which is a good size, but older  fourplex. It has borrowed furniture till mine arrives. The internet is painfully slow and we only get 500mb. a month, which I could use in 5 days if I’m not careful. So loading pictures is almost impossible.

The next day the blizzard continues, no planes land that day, and they close the hamlet. My new office is open and I head off to work, which I get a ride phew cause not sure where I live yet in the little hamlet.
I meet everyone and am pleasantly surprised, everyone is so nice. My work is turning out to be challenging and very comfortable. I travel in two weeks and will tour the Kitikmeot area. I will stop at 4 Schools and meet with the DEA assistants and principals of the Schools.

I have been crazy busy. This place is so social. I have gone to sewing class which I am making a pair of Caribou gloves. Which I so need, I am going to make a pair for Reza and then I want to make Gimmicks (spelling??) they are the seal or Caribou boats. Then I want to make a Mother Hubbard Parka. Yesterday was a going away party at work where I got to try Caribou (yummy). Then I was invited to a birthday party during the evening ( I had a great time and laughed so much).  They play volleyball, and curling. Lots of sports happen during the evening. I have been busy reading (work) in the evenings.

The weather since the blizzard has been gorgeous sun every day. It has snowed twice and that drifts around cause it is always windy. The wind makes the temp so much colder. The sun rises around 7 am and sets around 7pm. It is crazy dry here and everything you touch you get a huge zap, but I have gotten used to that. My lips have gotten used to the dry, at first it was horrible till I found my lipsul.

Prices are all over the map. Some things like cream $9.50, milk $8.00 for a 2L. Wagonwheels $22. But some (a few)things are almost the same as home.

Well I am going to work on my gloves today and some more reading material.

I'm Here

Well I arrived during a blizzard, -54. I jumped off the plane and nearly dove back on. -54 is verry cold..

Short update
Work is great, people are very friendly.
Weather has been beautiful sun (-30 ish) ever since I arrived.
Social life up here is crazy, I just got home from dinner at the neighbours, and Friday is 2 parties.

Hope everyone is well back home..

Edmonton

I'm here in Edmonton and there is snow on the ground -20. So far so good...ADVENTURE HERE I COME!

Sunday, March 6, 2011

Here I come ready or NOT!

I am tring to stuff my totes with my first love---FOOD! Second love --husband will be coming sooner than later...I know you can't stay away. Besides it will drive you crazy that I will be decorating our new home all by my artist self..heee. No doilies ALLOWED!

I fly out tomorrow night to Edmonton, overnight there. Tuesday morning off to Whitehorse, then Kugluktuk. Hope they don't have to get security to get me off the plane. I can see myself clinging, legs wrapped around the back of the seat in a commatose state, refusing to get off the plane. Well if they unload my food then I will follow that. Just shake the licorice bag, I'll fly after that.

Already grieving my wine, goodbye my dearest friend.

Oh yes it has been a very hard week saying goodbye to all my wonderful friends. Never goodbye, see ya soon! I have been blessed with the best friends ever, even if they think I've lost my noodles (food).

Mistake of sending me to Cambridge Bay

Well a new iten coming..not going to Cambridge bay yet!

Movers have come and I'm all packed... buried in boxes till tomorrow when they put them in the truck and drive away with my worldly pocessions. Ok I am hiding those in the basement, my survival needs.

Tic tic, I am so much better today after I went to Dinters and have my grow opt all planned out. Already thinking about phase two. Ok I gotta get phase one under conrol. I know I will be planting before I even unpack the main items. I will be looking for the box that says grow lights first. Maybe I should spray it so it will jump out to me right away.
