We have slid a little WEST

We have moved to the Northwest Territories. Oh to have trees. I live right on the banks of the MacKenzie River, near the end of the Ice road. The river is still frozen but soon it will break. The days are getting longer. It is still light when I go to bed and wake up.

Window Garden

A quick post while I am in Yellowknife and free internet...

I started a hydroponic windoe garden. It so far has 4 recycled bottles, inside is a natural wool with a soil pellet. I had to paint the bottoms and they are joined so the water can flow through each to the bottom reservor. I have to get my recyled I-V bag that I will inject with the fertiliser solution and it can feed my plants (that is if they grow) continuesly (SP).

Other thing you can see that the snow is melting!! The temp has been above 0 a few times. The moisture in the air is coming so it can feel like home somethings.

Well I can write more, I have a plane to catch...Just wanted the free internet to load some pics..

Melting....river running through..

Polar Bear and Gjoa haven

Today at work they said there was a Polar Bear sighting at 4 mile island, they said the hunters followed it and it was a young one they think lost. They said it had been about 20 years since a Polar bear had been this close to Kugluktuk.

A few weeks ago I was in Gjoa Haven working at the school on my way to the building this was my sights..

A Muskox and a White Fox, Muskox is used for sleeping on when they go out on the land. The fox is used for parkas around the head, hands and bottom of parks, as well as mukluks. They are a a must to keep warm and not lose a body part to frost bite.

I just love the look of this vehicle, but it doesn't run. sure looks cool though.

Giant big Ass bunnies. I wouldn't want to corner one of them, I think they could bite..

Goodbye Sun!

Well we are quickly losing our sun. It comes over the horizon around 10 ish and sinks 3 ish. Soon it will be gone completly. On one side is the sun and the other is the moon. Thay chase each other around the sky. They seem so huge here and we feel so much closer. The sky just facinates me here, it really is different than any other place I have been in the world.

Snow Blizzards

The last few days have been snow with high winds. The tempture is hovering around -10, but with the wind chill factor it is about -27. Halloween night was incredible, we had about 150 kids, and ran out of candy, chips. People were coming on snow mobiles, but there was not enough snow. This year is very mild and not as much snow as any other year they have said. It is usually completly white by this time of year, and much colder. I wonder what global warming is really doing? Lookig forward to Holidays and seeing my family, we miss them so much. Soon I will put up some more pictures. take care!

Snow in Kugaaruk

Hmm hmm Santa Claus is coming to errrch. It's September and it snowed. This is going to mess majorly with my internal seasonal clock. All my life snow = christmas. Well here it means fall, the kids have been back in school for a month already. I have been too busy to go to the ocean to see if I can see any whales. But I sneak peaks often. It really feels more comfortable when I come back into town and everyone remembers me. This is the place where they say they are stingy for me, sure makes me feel wanted. Miss everyone, write mee

Today I bought a Pepsi

I have had one pepsi since I have been in the Arctic, good thing I am not a pop drinker. Anyways I was at the northern and they had a sale on a case of Pepsi $ 19.98. For some reason I wanted a pepsi so I bought one and paid $2 a can. I realised when I bought my few grocery I was not looking at the price but the due date. Things here never get taken off the shelf. I think they just dry up and fall into the cracks. Someone told me they saw a can of meat on the shelf and it was 15 years old. They bought it for a keepsake.
The weather is getting colder, the wind is very cold. I guess the snow is coming..

Holy Smoke

I smell smoke this morning,  We are way above the tree line, but I sure smell smoke from forest fires. It is thick smoke in the air. Yesterday we had a southerly wind and it was crazy hot all night, It has carried smoke from the fires in NWT.

Anyways it is looking to be a hot day again, kinda looks like a fishing day..

Happy adventures

Whale

Coffee break and for snack is whale blubber...

They have caught some whale and eveyone in town was getting pieces of it. It is very popular, eaten raw..The weather here today was hot hot..On my temp outside my window it said 30' c mind you that is against the house facing the south. It really should be out of the direct sun, but I wanted to read it in the winter without going outside. I walked home after work with a shoulder of Caribou and a fish, I was sweating so much much by the time I got home..

I maybe heading back to Kugaaruk in a week or so.. It is the home of the Nar Whale, so maybe I will get to see one..

It is light out 24 hours, so kids come out to play around midnight and they play out all night, and sleep all day. They keep playing under our house first on the ice then in the water. It was very noisy and we were having problems sleeping. They would yell and scream and cry.. Sometimes at 2 am I would go out and tell them not to play there cause of the wires it was unsafe. They really did care and would still play. So one night i went out and showed them the septic and said there is poo poo under there, well they could not get out fast enough... The next night there were different kids playing so Reza went out and was saying poo poo, I could hear the kids saying what, he would repeat poo poo...I'm sure all the neighbours heard him saying we have poo poo, so we have not had a kid near our place in a few weeks... blessed sleep..

Have a great weekend All!
